How traditional ingredients have gained widespread popularity
The core properties of this traditional raw material should not be underestimated.
Our brown fused alumina is produced using an arc melting process, forming dense grains dominated by α-Al₂O₃. This provides high cutting efficiency and stable wear behavior in resin/ceramic bonded grinding wheels, coated sandpaper, and blasting media due to its high hardness and excellent self-sharpening properties.
It also functions as a high-temperature load-bearing aggregate and corrosion-resistant phase stabilizer in refractory formulations due to its high melting point, enhancing high-temperature strength and slag penetration resistance. Standard batches contain ≥95% Al₂O₃, with controlled Fe₂O₃ and soluble alkalis (which can be reduced upon order request). Customizable particle sizes (from 240 mesh to 3–10 mm) and batch COAs (Certificate of Analysis) are available to meet the traceability requirements of industrial mass production and engineering feedstocks.
Raw material product mechanism and technology analysis
- Phase & Hardness: Arc melting promotes the dominance of the α-Al₂O₃ phase, resulting in a Mohs hardness of up to 9. For Brown Corundum for Abrasives, high hardness and crystalline brittleness facilitate micro-fracture, continuously exposing the cutting edge and improving removal rate. In the refractory materials field, it provides high-temperature non-melting, low-deformation aggregate support, increasing thermal load-bearing capacity.
- Grain Morphology: Angular particles generated by rapid cooling or controlled solidification can self-break during grinding to form new cutting edges (improving cutting efficiency). In refractory systems, the mechanical interlocking of angular particles enhances cold and high-temperature strength.
- Chemical Control: The content of Fe₂O₃, CaO, and soluble Na₂O/K₂O is controlled by screening raw materials and sintering parameters. Low iron and low alkali content in abrasives means less part staining/contamination. For Brown Corundum for Refractory, this translates to lower slag activity and better resistance to slag penetration. It is recommended that critical refractory engineering requirements include soluble alkali < 0.5% (further customization is possible depending on the specific application).
- Particle size and fines control: Strict grading ensures target D50 and fines control (e.g., <5% is an optional target), impacting grinding stability in grinding/coating processes. For casting/molding formulations, it affects slump and water-cement ratio, helping to maintain formulation consistency and controllable firing shrinkage.
Dual value: One item serves two purposes, reducing procurement complexity
